Dhirendra Nanji Lakhani (“Dhiru”) was born in in Porbandar, India. His early years were spent in Calicut, where his father was a forester. Independent and strong willed as a youngster, Dhiru went against his family’s expectations of him joining the family business and decided to apply to medical school. He gained admission to Kasturba Medical College and qualified from Manipal University in 1974. During his undergraduate training, he met his future wife, Chetna, and they began planning their life together.
