Geoffrey Donald Wilson was the youngest of seven children to Alice Mabel and John George Wilson. His mother was a journalist, and his father worked on the railways. He was born in the small village of Wavendon in Bedfordshire, near what is now Milton Keynes. At that time the family home had no electricity, TV, radio, phone, running water, or sewer system.
Geoffrey won a scholarship to Bedford Modern School, where he studied ancient history, English, and Latin. He enrolled with the Royal Air Force in 1940. He was not able to become a pilot because of a medical condition affecting his heart, …
