My opinion is that patients' involvement in research is absolutely correct. However, there is some difference in competence and background that should be overcome to give full sense to the discussion. The awareness of patients about research design and organisation is heterogeneous, and it is unclear who should fill this gap. Who does take care of the training of patients as researchers and experts of the risks assessment of every kind of research? Without this kind of awareness the great expectations of patients can be easily manipulated.
