Gregory Anthony Hugh Cookson was born on 24 April 1928 in Bristol. He weighed 4 lbs at birth and spent the first month of his life sleeping in a cot made from a large cardboard shoe box balanced on top of a radiator to keep him warm.
His father was a general practitioner, and from an early age Gregory had an ambition to study medicine.
