John Cockrill spent his youth in County Tyrone and qualified at Trinity College Dublin in 1950. He was proud of his Irish heritage and maintained close links with Trinity all his life.
He was initially interested in following a surgical career and worked in Liverpool and the Royal Marsden Hospital. He changed course in 1963 and entered general practice in Rainham but found that he could not agree with the future direction of NHS general practice and resigned in 1967. He was a highly respected, successful, and popular independent GP in Rainham for the rest of his career.
