Joan Veronica Macdonald was born in Wimbledon in 1922, the eldest of three sisters. Her father was honorary physician to the Queen. Her mother was a capable woman who, as well as encouraging her three daughters into medical careers, was fit and active, and like Joan, played tennis well into her 80s.

When Joan was 3, her family moved to Barnsley, where, in 1927, her father was appointed as the local medical officer of health. In 1930 the family moved to Stockport, and Joan attended Stockport High School. It was there that, …
