Joan Veronica Macdonald was born in Wimbledon in 1922, the eldest of three sisters. Her father was honorary physician to the Queen. Her mother was a capable woman who, as well as encouraging her three daughters into medical careers, was fit and active, and like Joan, played tennis well into her 80s.
