Born in Bexleyheath, Alan Bussey was evacuated to Reigate at the age of 10 and won a scholarship to Reigate Grammar School. He then undertook his National Service in the Royal Air Force, gaining his pilot’s licence and the Sword of Honour as the best pilot in his cohort. On leaving the RAF he started his medical training at the London Hospital.
He followed this with house jobs in ophthalmology in Brentford, and obstetrics and gynaecology in Shoreham. He then joined a general practice in Angmering, West Sussex, where he stayed until 1966, starting as a junior partner and then becoming …
