Obstructuve sleep apnea and periodic limb movements
The presence of OSAHS (Obstructive sleep Apnea-Hypopnea syndrome) and
the concurrent signs of neurologic disease, in this case, periodic limb
movements has been studied recently.
The series by Chen R et al (2010) considered 229 consecutive diagnosis
of OSAHS patients, and 118 patients were detectedwith both OSAHS and
PLM. Some indexes were measured related to indicators and variables: total
time of sleep, percentage of sleep stages, REM latency, sleep
efficiency, lowest SpO2, oxygen reducing index, apnea-hypopnea index,
index of PLMs during sleep, PLMs with arousals.
Increase in sleep stage 1 ( p=0.04 ) was associated with increased PLM
index.
