    Bernard Isaacs had the good fortune to enter the emerging specialty of geriatric medicine in the 1950s at Glasgow’s Stobhill Hospital, where Professor Ferguson Anderson and his colleagues understood the challenge of rehabilitating the elderly patients with chronic diseases who had been admitted to their wards. In 1975 Isaacs left Glasgow when he was appointed to the chair of geriatric medicine at Birmingham University.
