Suryamoni Mitra (née Devi) was a woman of determination and courage, accomplishing in her community what others could barely dream of. Born in an orthodox lower middle class Brahmin family, she walked barefoot to Ravenshaw College. She graduated in medicine from Prince of Wales Medical College, Patna, also receiving her postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology from there.
Her training should have stopped there, but she decided to study further in the United Kingdom than to go to the United States, for which she was selected.
