    Alexander Gordon Bearn (“Alick”) was born in Cheam, Surrey, on 29 March 1923 and received his early education at Epsom College. He studied medicine at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, where he was a house officer during 1946-7. He was a medical officer in the Royal Air Force during 1947-9 followed by resident appointments at the Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, from 1949 to 1951. He left London for New York in 1951 and joined the Rockefeller University and Institute, where he was successively assistant professor, professor, visiting physician, and adjunct professor from 1951 to 1966.
