After qualification, David Millward undertook house jobs at Bridgend General Hospital and the professorial medical unit at Cardiff Royal Infirmary. He signed on for an extra year during his national service in the Royal Army Medical Corps, attached to the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in Cyprus and Germany. On returning from Cyprus, he married Elaine, a nurse, whom he had met on the medical unit, and they started married …
