Mark Barone

Dr. Mark Barone holds a PhD in Human Physiology and two post-graduate diplomas, in Diabetes Education and in Communication, and has more than two decades of experience in public and global health, education and advocacy. He is currently Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Founder and General Manager of the Intersectoral Forum to Fight NCDs in Brasil (ForumDCNTs), member of the Steering Committee of Life for a Child (LFAC) International Program, member of the IAPO’s Scientific Advisory Board, and of the Ramaiah International Centre for Public Health Innovations (RICPHI), as well as of the Education Department of the Brazilian Diabetes Society (SBD), and researcher and programs manager at the ADJ Diabetes Brasil.

As an active advocate living with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease since the age of 10, Mark has participated in movements that led to full coverage of diabetes treatment in Brazil in the 2000’s. He has started, coordinated, partnered and/or supervised programs to build capacity and empower individuals with NCDs and improve access and treatment, such as the Brazilian Young Leaders in Diabetes Training, the IDF Young Leaders in Diabetes Programme, and the Diabetes and Hypertension Care Improvement in the Brazilian Primary Healthcare. In 2018, he assisted Brazilian health NGOs to align and participate bringing a single and stronger voice to the UNGA on NCDs. He has also recently joined efforts with Rise Up to bring to Brazil and supervise through ADJ Diabetes Brasil a gender equity program that empower girls in 18 different countries, The Girls’ Voices.

He has been member of the board of directors of ADJ Diabetes Brasil since 2008, where he started some programs that were awarded and inspired similar programs abroad, including the Young Leaders in Diabetes Training, the Diabetes Camp for Young Adults and several educational publications and materials, including books, and board and digital games (https://scholar.google.com.br/citations?user=I_KbLOsAAAAJ&hl). In 2017, the Intersectoral Forum to Fight NCDs in Brazil that he founded (www.ForumDCNTs.org) is a successful multiplatform model that facilitates the formation of partnerships and alliances, connecting the main stakeholders from different sectors to achieve the SDG 3.4 through effective, sustainable and scalable solutions (included also in the Partnerships Platform of the UN-SDGs: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/partnership/?p=32811).
